Expert Oral Surgeon in Cupertino & Los gatos
Dr. Nima Massoomi is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a pioneer in robotics for the face. He resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with practices in Cupertino and Los Gatos. Originally from New York, he grew up adjacent to the Adirondack Mountains, the site of the famous 1980 Olympics. He attended St. Lawrence University majoring in Biochemistry and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
From Lab Research to Dentistry
Subsequently, he moved to Boston to pursue a career in cancer research at Boston University Medical School, studying the gene expression of Collagen and Elastin. After a few years, he realized that being a so-called “lab rat” was not his calling. He then quickly shifted gears and pursued a combined dual degree at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School and School of Education, one of only 6 people to do so out of his class of 120. Additionally, during his second year in dental school, he was one of only 10 students in the US to win a prestigious research fellowship at the National Institute of Health (NIH/NIDCR), where he researched the gene expression of mast cells, that is a key cell in any allergic reaction.
Education & Experience
It was toward the end of his dental school education, when he decided to further his schooling, with the hopes of pursuing an academic teaching position in the future. In 2001, he obtained his Dental (D.M.D.) and Master’s in Education (M.Ed.). This is when he decided to attend medical school at Vanderbilt University while pursuing a six-year residency program in one of the original Oral and Maxillofacial surgery programs in the United States dating back to the 1960s.
He graduated from medical school at Vanderbilt University (M.D.) in 2004, where he then completed his Oral Surgery training in 2007. This was followed by a Cosmetic surgery fellowship in 2008 at Ohio State alongside Dr. T. William Evans, where he fine-tuned his skills in the management of the soft tissue of the face.
Finally in the summer of 2008, after 15 years of schooling, he decided to hit the road, to start paying back his student loans! He moved to majestic Northern California and founded his first practice in Cupertino, with the aim to create a ‘one-stop- shop for anything related to the face, from facial trauma to oral surgical procedures, including the beautification of the face and smile. Then in 2010 he expanded his practice to San Francisco and formed a second office in the heart of the financial district called San Francisco Surgical Arts (SFSA), with the goal to create better access for his patients who may live in Silicon Valley. Of note, this office became the first Platinum LEED-certified green office in the nation, winning numerous architectural and design awards. This office was featured in the foremost book on medical and dental office design that was published by Ms. Jain Malkin Inc.

Leadership and Teaching
Dr. Massoomi is the immediate past president of the Santa Clara Dental Society (SCCDS), one of the largest dental societies in the country. Additionally, he is on the Board of directors of the California Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (CALAOMS) and will be the president in 2027, leading the largest group of oral surgeons in the Country.
Since moving to California in 2008, he has been a clinical instructor at the Department of Oral Surgery at the University of Pacific (UOP) in San Francisco, committed to the education of future dentists and surgeons, and while most faculty took early retirement and bolted during the 2020 Pandemic, he stuck around for his students. He has lectured nationally and internationally on the use of technology in oral surgical procedures and has led numerous national and international mission trips with his dental students for the past 15 years.
Advancing Surgical Robotics
In 2013, Dr. Massoomi became part of the team that helped develop and bring to market the first FDA-approved robot called “YOMI” for Dental Surgery. In February 2018, he became the first oral surgeon in the US to successfully place an immediate implant using YOMI. He was recently featured on San Francisco Channel 11 NBC’s Press:Here for his involvement with YOMI. As a result of this new technology, Dr. Massoomi’s practice underwent a rebranding in 2017 under the trademark of Bay Area Surgical Arts (BASA), to encompass all of his clinical, teaching, and innovative activities.
Lastly, in whatever time he has left, Dr. Massoomi enjoys biking, spinning to techno, and is always in search of the best grub in the Bay Area…yes, you can call him a foodie!
