Pre-op Safety Guidelines for Patients & Caregivers Prior to IV Anesthesia
To assist you and your family in achieving a safe and comfortable completion of your treatment, please follow these instructions, otherwise we may need to cancel and reschedule your surgery. Failure to comply with any of these instructions can pose a threat to your safety during and after the surgery. If any questions, please call us!
Eating Before Surgery
We recommend you avoid food for atleast 8 hours before your surgery.
- Food contents in the stomach during sedation can lead to a life-threatening emergency from vomiting
and aspirating stomach contents into the lungs. - For healthy children and adults, we recomment drinking small amounts of clear liquids (water or carbohydrate-containing liquids) up to 2 hours before your surgery. Some patients may require prolonged fasting for safety.
*Healthy patients are those without coexisting conditions that may increase the risk for aspiration: esophageal disorders (untreated gastroesophogeal reflux disease (GERD), hiatal hernia, previous gastric surgery, gastroparesis, diabetes, chronic opioid use, gastrointestinal obstruction, pregnancy, obesity, and emergency procedures.
Accompanying a Minor
A responsible, authorized adult/escort must accompany minor patients under the age of 18 on the day of surgery. Please don not bring other children or dependants.
Smoking and Drinking Prior to Surgery
Do not smoke/vape anything (tobacco, marijuana, any elicit drugs) or consume any alcohol for atleast 7 days prior to surgery.
Medications & Supplementation
- Take your usual blood pressure medication prior to surgery.
- Please use and bring to your surgery appointment any inhalers you use on a regular basis
- Diabetics: If you are taking any oral medications for your diabetes, Do not take the day of surgery. If you take Metformin at night, half your dose the night before surgery.
- Do not take any medications with the following active ingredients within 7 days prior to surgery:
- Aspirin, Celecoxib, Diclofenac, Diflunisal, Dipyridamole, Dulaglutide, Etodolac, Exenatide, Fenprofen, Flurbiprofen, Ginko Biloba, Ibuprofen, Ketoprofen, Ketorolac, Liraglutide, MultiVitamin with E, Meclofenamate, Mefanamic Acid, Nabumeton, Naproxen, PhenyIbutazone, Piroxicam, Semagultide, Tirzepatide, Tolmentin.
Driving & Operating Machinery
DO NOT DRIVE OR OPERATE ANY HAZARDOUS MACHINERY AFTER YOUR SURGERY. Please coordinate for a responsible adult to take you home after your surgery. We cannot discharge you home with an UBER or LYFT driver only.
Items to Avoid Bringing to Your Surgery Appointment
We ask that you do not wear or bring any of the following to your surgery appointment:
- Long-sleeve shirt: Please wear dark-colored, loose-fitting, comfy clothes, i.e., pajamas!
- Makeup: Please do not wear any lipstick, foundation, eyeliner, or false eyelashes.
- Nail Polish: Please do not wear nailpolish. This is needed for oxygen monitoring of the index fingers during surgery.
- Piercings: Please remove any and all piercings on and around the face and oral cavity. This includes earrings, lip, nose, and toungue rings.
- Jewelry:Please do not wear any valuables or jewelry. This includes necklaces, watches, rings, and any wearable health devices.
- Contact Lenses: Please do not wear contact lenses to your appointment.
- Cell Phone: Cell phone signals have been shown to interfere with the monitoring equipment during surgery. We will be asking you to remove and turn off your cell phone during surgery.
Illness & Sickness
If you experience any illness such as fevers, chills, respiratoru infections or any other significant medical changes within 4 weeks of your surgery, please contact us right away.
