There was a new position paper published by the AAOMS (Amer. Assoc. of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons) outlining the latest guidelines as to how to classify, treat and possibly prevent jaw infection secondary to all the antiporosis medications. These medications are part of a billion dollar industry that spends millions in TV commercials to promote these medication. Only recently they are making mentioned of possible “jaw problems” when taking these medications.
So if you have loved ones that are taking any antiporosis medications, of the class bisphosphonates, you may want to ask them how long they have been on it and why? the risk for jaw fracture increases after 4 years.
These are the Bisphosphonates:
- Alendronate (Fosamax®)
- Risedronate (Actonel®)
- Ibandronate (Boniva®)
- Pamidronate (Aredia®)
- Zolendronate (Zometa®) / (Reclast®)
