Well it seems there is new research that cold turkey quitting may be more effective than a “quitting plan”.
Lindson-Hawley and her team from Oxford University set out to compare the two strategies to see which one is a more effective approach. Looks like its the cold turkey!
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), half of all smokers who keep smoking will end up dying from a smoking-related illness.
In the US alone, smoking is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths and more than 16 million people suffer from smoking-related issues (lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)).
The results showed that at 4 weeks, 39% of the gradual quitters had avoided smoking , as compared to 49% of the “cold turkey” group.
At 6 months: just over 15% in the gradual group remained abstinent, while 22% for those who quit doing it cold turkey!
Very interesting and opposite to what we have known from previous research.
