What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone, to mimic the root of a tooth.  It is made of the same titanium that is used in shoulders, knees, hips, and other prosthetic joints. A dental implant serves as a sturdy foundation for the crown that will replace a missing tooth.  Implants can support a single crown, a dental bridge to replace a few teeth, or even replace the patient’s full set of teeth in a concept known as “All-on-4” or more recently as “All-on-x”.  The key to their success lies in osseointegration—a process where the implant fuses with the bone, ensuring a durable and stable solution.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer numerous advantages, making them a popular choice for tooth replacement:

  1. Natural Look and Feel: Implant-supported restorations look, feel, and function just like natural teeth.
  2. Long-Lasting Results: With proper care, implants can last for decades, outperforming other tooth replacement options, such as bridges that only last about 10 -15 year, if done properly with the right material.
  3. Improved Comfort: Unlike traditional dentures, implant-supported teeth do not need to be removed.  They are secured to your bone and don’t slip or cause irritation.
  4. Eat with Confidence: Without having to worry about your dentures popping out.  Enjoy your favorite foods, such as eating corn or biting into an apple!
  5. Preserve Bone Health: Every time you chew on an implant, it stimulates the underlying jawbone, preventing bone loss and osteoporosis often seen in patients that are missing teeth.

The Dental Implant Process

At Bay Area Surgical Arts, we use the latest advanced technology to ensure your dental implant journey is as smooth and successful as possible. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Consultation and Evaluation

Your journey begins with a thorough evaluation by the surgeon.  Using 3D CBCT imaging, we assess your jaw structure in 3 dimensions, to determine if you are a candidate for a dental implant.  If your bone is insufficient, a bone graft may be recommended to create a strong foundation for the implant.  With the use of robotics and 3D printing, we can sometimes do bone grafting and implants at the same time avoiding the long wait.  That is typically seen in other offices.

  1. Implant Placement

Because of our robotic system, we can use minimally invasive, “flapless” techniques, without the need to make any incisions or sutures.  The titanium implant is surgically placed into your jawbone and the exact position is determined by your 3D CBCT.  This procedure is very precise and efficient, thanks to the YOMI robotic guidance system, which ensures optimal placement and quicker recovery.  Many of our patients who present for the follow-up appointments 7 to 10 days after surgery tell us that they have had absolutely no pain and minimal swelling.

  1. Healing and Osseointegration

During the healing “osseointegration” period, your bone naturally integrates with the implant, creating a stable anchor for your new tooth. This process typically takes 3 to 6 months, depending on your overall health.

  1. Abutment Placement

Once the implant has fully integrated, we will see you to confirm that the implant has fully osseointegrated before we clear you to see your dentist for your crown, i.e. final restoration. This step is crucial for ensuring a natural and seamless process.

  1. Final Restoration

Your general dentist will create a custom crown, bridge, or denture to attach to the implant. The result is a beautiful, functional smile designed to last for decades.

Advanced Technology for Superior Results

As a Pioneer in robotic surgery, Dr. Massoomi is at the forefront of dental implant technology, utilizing tools like the FDA-cleared YOMI robotic system.  This state-of-the-art device enhances both the planning and surgical phases of implant placement, ensuring precision and reducing recovery time.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

While dental implants are a fantastic solution, not everyone is a candidate.  Factors such as overall health, bone density, and gum condition play a role in determining eligibility.  During your consultation, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
